A pregnant woman was killed and another young woman was seriously injured after being attacked by a herd of six elephants in the Moamba region of Maputo, southern Mozambique, an official source told Luse this Monday.
The incident happened on Saturday morning when the two women were searching for firewood in the forest, Moamba County Permanent Secretary Athanasio Mwitu said.
The 18-year-old managed to escape the animals and call the other victim’s husband.
The permanent secretary also said the injured young woman had surgery on Sunday and was still in hospital but “out of danger”.
The elephant herd may have left the Kruger National Park in South Africa, a country neighboring Mozambique, according to Atanasio Mwitu.
Wild animal attacks occur frequently in several rural regions near Mozambique’s game reserves.
According to official figures for 2020, according to the National Administration of Nature Reserves (ANAC), a total of 97 Mozambicans were killed and 66 injured in recorded attacks alone (others not reported) by wild animals, most of them crocodiles.
In the same year, 258 domestic animals, including cattle, sheep and goats, were killed by lions, hyenas and crocodiles, and 248.81 hectares of various crops were destroyed.
