Cavaco ironically compares his two years in power with the eight years of the PS.

Former Prime Minister Aníbal Cavaco Silva signed a text this Wednesday in the Observador in which he ironically compares his last two years of government in the 1990s with the last eight years of the Socialist Party.

This is the first of two texts published by the former President of the Republic in the Observador. The second part of the article will be published next Tuesday and will be devoted to the sin of “political arrogance.”

“Despite the lack of humility and vanity attributed to me, I say that I am absolutely convinced that in this decade, thanks to the actions of my Government, the development of Portugal in all its dimensions has taken a leap forward, which has greatly surprised the European Union and that in no other decade no such result was achieved,” he begins.

In a text this Wednesday, Cavaco Silva recalls the program to eliminate stalls in the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto, the completion of the IP4 section to complete the connection between Amarante and Bragança, the construction of the Ponte de Freixo (in Porto) and the Vasco da Gama Bridge (Lisbon), the launch of the international competition for the introduction of a train on the 25 April bridge and, among other things, promoting the creation of Portugal Telecom.

“What has been written is enough to demonstrate that it is understandable that renowned political scientists and chroniclers consider it natural that government ministers should feel some physical fatigue, such is the extent of the work done during the last two years of my decade. as prime minister compared to eight years of the current socialist government,” he notes.

Cavaco Silva also states that “renowned political analysts and chroniclers” who say his government was “tired and arrogant” wanted to “express definitely the idea that the work done in that final period was of such a magnitude that it it was natural.” that members of his government “felt some physical fatigue.”

“My satisfaction with this work is all the greater because it was carried out at a time when the government was faced with strong political opposition, both legitimate and less legitimate,” he emphasizes.

The former ruler also recalled the “political arrogance and vanity” with which, on April 26, 1995, at the end of the opening ceremony of the Autoeuropa car plant, he drove “a car produced there, driving a lap around the test track.” .

“There are six months left before he ceases his duties as prime minister,” he pointed out, asking: “When will there be another project like Auto-Europe, which the socialist government has been talking about?”

Cavaco Silva was Prime Minister from November 6, 1985 to October 28, 1995.
