Electric vehicle sales in Europe will grow by 37% in 2023

New electric vehicles took up 14.6% of the European market last year, with 1.5 million units sold, up 37% on 2020, setting a new record, it was announced this Thursday.

Electric vehicles have overtaken diesel cars for the first time in a full year, despite a less than strong December due to the end of subsidized purchases in Germany, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).

New car sales in Europe grew 13.9% last year, driven by hybrid, electric and petrol models, according to data published by ACEA.

In particular, the French, Italian and Spanish markets saw double-digit growth compared to 2022.

However, Germany, the continent’s largest market, stalled in December, recording a 23% year-on-year decline as subsidies for the purchase of electric vehicles ended.
