The Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) has ruled in favor of Sevilla in the case in which the Spanish club fired the Ivorian footballer Jordi Nagnon in 2021 due to poor fitness, the emblem announced this Thursday.
According to Sevilla, TAS considered the player’s dismissal to be appropriate for failing to maintain sufficient body weight to compete, after requiring the player to take his profession seriously and strictly.
The TAS decision ends a long-running dispute between Sevilla and the player, which began following the centre-back’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic and ended with his unilateral sacking in September 2021.
The court states that “the player was seriously overweight and was unable to correct it despite four disciplinary proceedings.”
According to Sevilla, Nagnon had the opportunity to comply with the recommendations and prescriptions of medical and nutritional services, as well as sports rehabilitation services, but “he was not able to comply with all of them of his own free will.” will”.
The case led to the centre-back appealing to a Spanish court and then to FIFA, which rejected the complaint and it went all the way to TAS, who have now found the club in favor and also ordered the player to pay legal costs.
Nagnon, 27, is without a club after signing with Saint-Etienne for the 2021/22 season but not playing a single game.
