League applauds FIFA’s permission to explain VAR decisions in Portugal in real time

The Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP) welcomed this Thursday the permission given by FIFA to the Council of Arbitration (CA) of the Portuguese Federation (FPF) to explain referee decisions in real time using a video referee (VAR).

“The Portuguese League welcomes the decision of FIFA and IFAB to allow the referee to transmit referee decisions on the field in situations where the referee intervenes via video, live in the stadium via sound installation and at home via television broadcast.” , can be read in a note released by the organization.

At the same time, the organization recalls that it has long ago, together with the clubs, “identified this measure as a way to bring fans closer to the game and understand the decisions made by the refereeing teams through the use of the refereeing system.” .VAR.”

The League will therefore “make every effort to achieve what is proposed”, starting with the League Cup Final Four matches, which will be held in Leiria from the 23rd to the 27th.

The measure will be used on a trial basis in competitions that have implemented VAR, professional competitions and the final phase of League 3, and the CA is now waiting for the Club League to identify stadiums that will comply with its implementation.

The system already exists in other sports such as rugby and has already been trialled by FIFA in competitions such as the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

The approval from FIFA and IFAB allows Portugal to become one of the pioneers in moving to the testing phase of this system, although it is not yet known when this will begin.

Since September 2023, communication between referees and video referees (VARs) for Portuguese First League games has been carried out through a monthly television program.
