This Friday, Benfica beat Boavista na Luz 2-0 and pushed Sporting back to the top of the league, leaving the rivals separated by just one point.
Roger Schmidt surprised by leaving Joao Neves on the bench (he played Florentino instead), but Benfica always had the advantage in the game. In attacking football, Boavista were relegated to defensive duties, and the truth is that the players felt comfortable in this position, partly due to the general lack of success from Arthur Cabral, Di Maria, Joao Mario and even Rafa. Goalkeeper Joao Goncalves responded to the challenges posed by Benfica fans in style and benefited from collective solidarity.
In the second half, Benfica showed everything and Di Maria even scored a goal that was eventually disallowed due to João Mário’s hand early in the game.
Estádio da Luz began to get nervous and Bozhenik came close to scoring a goal for the chess team, earning Trubin’s intervention.
Rafa even headed wide of the goal, which was a harbinger of Di Maria’s goal. The Argentine shot wide of the goal and the ball went straight into the goal, despite threats from Arthur Cabral and Joao Mario.
The checkered lines extended further forward, but were limited to just causing goosebumps. Despite this, Benfica were always the more dangerous side and Luz was delighted with another goal scored by Marcos Leonardo after an assist from Di Maria. A fair triumph, but with some unnecessary suffering.
