The Mozambique LAM will now directly link South Africa and Cabo Delgado.

Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM) announced this Sunday the creation of a direct “air bridge” between Johannesburg, South Africa, and Pemba, in the province of Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country, with three weekly flights later this month.

A note from Mozambique’s state airline, consulted by Lusa, said the message was aimed at “promoting business and tourism” and would begin on January 29.

The new service complements other direct flights that LAM has already introduced in recent months, as part of a revival process ongoing since April last year, between Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa, as well as Maputo, Inhambane and Vilanculos, followed, if now, by Pemba.

The debut of this “air bridge” comes at a time when several international organizations point to the announcement of the resumption of the TotalEnergies natural gas project in Cabo Delgado, one of the largest of its kind in Africa and suspended since 2021 due to terrorists in the region inevitable.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) itself last week assessed the resumption earlier this year of TotalEnergies’ LNG megaproject in Mozambique at a value of US$20 billion, given improved security conditions.

“Security conditions in the north [Cabo Delgado] continue to improve and a major LNG project is expected to restart. [Gás Natural Liquefeito] which was interrupted in April 2021 at the beginning of 2024,” said a report published last week by Lusa on the approval this month of the third implementation evaluation of the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program, 36 months, in Mozambique.

The Johannesburg-Pemba route is part of the operator’s revival plan after South African company Fly Modern Ark (FMA) came into LAM’s administration in April last year for a restructuring process.

LAM’s flight network spans 12 destinations domestically, regionally it regularly flies to Johannesburg, Dar es Salaam, Harare, Lusaka and Cape Town, with Lisbon becoming its only intercontinental destination from 12 December.

LAM operates more than 40 flights daily, operated by its fleet of one Boeing 737, three Q400s, two Bombardier CRJ 900s and two Embraer 145s operated by its subsidiary Moçambique Expresso (MEX).
