Yemeni Presidential Council leader assures US and UK attacks will not stop Houthis

This Saturday, the leader of Yemen’s Presidential Council asked the United States and Saudi Arabia for support to “deprive” the Houthis of the ability to carry out attacks on ships, arguing that defensive operations are not enough.

“Defensive operations are not the solution,” Rashad al-Alimi told a news conference in the Saudi capital Riyadh, as quoted by AFP, referring to US and British attacks on Yemeni rebels.

“The solution is to eliminate the Houthis’ military capabilities,” he said.

US Central Command (Centcom) said it had hit a Houthi anti-ship missile “ready to launch” towards the Red Sea this morning.

Since November, Yemen’s Houthi rebels have said they have attacked ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden that they believe are linked to Israel in a show of “solidarity” with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip affected by the war between the Israeli army and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas. .

Faced with an increase in attacks in the Red Sea, the United States, sometimes alongside its ally the United Kingdom, began attacking Houthi positions in Yemen in early January with the goal of “protecting” maritime traffic from Houthi attacks. Iran-backed rebels.
