This Friday, FIFA confirmed a three-year ban against Luis Rubiales, former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), for kissing the player Jenny Hermoso in the 2023 World Cup final.
FIFA’s statement explained that it had decided to “dismiss the appeal” filed by Rubiales, upholding the three-year suspension of all football-related activities imposed on the former RFEF president on October 30.
The organization indicates that the decision can be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), guaranteeing, however, its determination to “protect the integrity of everyone and guarantee compliance with the basic rules of conduct.”
The Women’s World Cup final, played on 20 August, was marked by a kiss on the lips from the then RFEF president to player Jenny Hermoso during celebrations for Spain’s 1-0 victory over England at Sydney Stadium. , and the attacker repeated that there was no consent to this.
The behavior of Rubiales, who has meanwhile resigned as president of the RFEF, led to disciplinary proceedings by the Spanish Administrative Court of Sports and FIFA, as well as a court complaint filed by the player.
However, Rubiales resigned as president of the RFEF and was suspended by FIFA, and he announced that he would appeal, promising to go “to the last resort so that justice is done and the truth is restored.”
On Thursday, a National Audience judge announced that Luis Rubiales would stand trial given that the kiss was “non-consensual” and the decision could still be appealed.
