Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, the No. 4 player in the world, won the first Grand Slam title of his career this Sunday, defeating Russian second seed Daniil Medveded in the final of the 2024 Australian Open.
In his first major final, the 22-year-old Sinner defeated Medvedev, fighting in the sixth, in five sets, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and 6-3, in a match that lasted three hours and 44 minutes.
“The Executioner” and successor to Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, 10-time Melbourne champion, became the fifth Italian to win a Grand Slam title, after Nicola Pietrangeli (1959 and 1960), Adriano Panatta (1976) and Francesca Schiavone (2010), winner of Roland Garros and Flavia Pennetta (2015), US Open winner.
