According to investigators, two funeral home employees, after falsifying documents, transported the body, which was in the hospital morgue, to the university instead of burying it. The deceased should have been buried at his place of residence, in a joint funeral paid for by the city council, but he was sold to study for almost 1,200 euros, without the consent of a single family member or friend.
Another man was brought into the house in the same manner, and it appears that it was this man who, three days before his death, authorized the donation of his body for research. Later it became clear that at that moment the man’s mental abilities were weakened due to worsening cognitive deficits, which did not allow him to understand what donation meant. It was signed in order for the corpse to be sent to a certain medical school, which meant he would have to pay more for it. However, the body was taken to someone else. To do this, the criminal organization had to trick medical professionals into signing off on changing the body’s destination.
The target was people without family, preferably foreigners or living in difficult conditions, which ensured that these donations would not be controlled by any family members.
In accordance with La Avangardia, there were also irregularities in the cremation of bodies that would have been donated to science. Apparently, after graduation, universities had to pay for cremation, which was the responsibility of the funeral home itself. After several investigations, it was discovered that the funeral home had invoiced the university for 5,040 euros for 11 cremations, which were not reflected in the invoices issued by any of the incinerators operating in Valencia.
The criminal organization took advantage of the dissection and dismemberment of the bodies to place them in the coffins of other deceased people, cremating several corpses in one cremation, saving the amount paid and at the same time exposing them to the university.
National police have detained the directors of the funeral home in question, as well as two of its employees, as alleged perpetrators of fraud and forgery.
