A man sentenced to 130 years for a crime committed in Hawaii was released on Tuesday after more than 20 years in prison.
Albert Schweitzer was sentenced in 2000 to 130 years in prison for murder, kidnapping and sexual harassment when he visited Hawaii in 1991. Judge Peter Kubota ordered the man’s release immediately after his innocence was proven, North-American radio reported. NPR.
Schweitzer was imprisoned in the state of Arizona, in the United States of America.
The justice system is “imperfect,” said Schweiter, who also credited the judge for “making the right decision.”
Monday’s petition revealed further evidence of one of the “big island’s” most emblematic crimes, allegedly taking place on Christmas Eve 1991, and allowed Schweitzer to be acquitted.
