Government cuts support for distribution of fruit, vegetables and dairy products in schools

The government has revised the rules for assistance in the distribution of fruits, vegetables and dairy products in schools, reducing the expected amount per student compared to last year, according to a decree published this Thursday in the Diário da República.

The diploma establishes additional national rules for assistance in the distribution of fruits, vegetables and bananas, as well as milk and dairy products in pre-school institutions and first-level educational institutions, applicable until 2029.

According to the rules in force until the last school year, the amount of aid per student per school year is revised taking into account “the market situation and the significant changes in food prices recorded in recent years,” with a reduction compared to the previous school year. update made last year.

According to the decree, planned assistance is limited to 9.00 euros per student in the case of the distribution of fruits and vegetables and 5.70 euros for milk, yoghurt and cheese.

At the beginning of last year, due to inflation, the government updated the amount provided for in the rules introduced in 2017, increasing the aid for fruits and vegetables from 6.73 to 11.10 euros and from 4.00 to 7.03 euros in the case of milk.

On the other hand, the new regulation introduces a greater variety of products, including natural yoghurts without added sugar or sweeteners, single-serve cheeses and lactose-free options, as well as some fruits that were not originally included, such as custard. apple, kiwi and persimmon.
