The direction of traffic on Rua dos Douradores in Lisbon will be changed from Thursday due to sewer repair work starting in a south-north direction, the municipality announced this Wednesday.
The Lisbon City Council said in a statement that once Rua da Prata is closed to traffic due to sewer works, traffic on Rua dos Douradores will be diverted to allow passenger cars to reach Praça do Rossio.
The movement of heavy vehicles must be carried out along Rua da Madalena.
The municipality also calls for avoiding “traffic in this area of the city” to avoid traffic restrictions.
Alternatively, the council suggests that traffic coming from Parque das Nações should choose Avenida Infante Dom Henrique and Avenida Mouzinho de Albuquerque, while traffic coming from Belem should choose Avenida de Ceuta or Avenida Infante Santo and Dom Carlos I.
The Rua da Prata was cut off from traffic on December 16 due to reduced pavement and the work was carried out a few days later, with an unknown duration of the intervention, the municipality said at the time.
According to the Lisbon City Council, chaired by Carlos Moedas (PSD), the existing Pombaline sewer on this road was inspected and the “wall collapse” of the collector was confirmed.
The municipality also said in a statement that “the heavy rains of recent days have caused additional stress on the network, contributing to the rupture of the sewer walls.”
“Reconstruction work will begin next Monday, December 19, and the duration of the work is estimated depending on the occurrence of more rainfall and the actual extent of damage, which can only be more strictly assessed after the completion of demolition and earthworks on the damaged area begins,” according to information published at the time.
During the intervention, traffic will be stopped on Rua da Prata, on the section between Rua da Conceição and Praça da Figueira.
