Formula 1 announced this Monday a rule change to favor overtaking in races starting this season.
According to the World Championship organizers, the DRS system (opening the rear wing of the following car for less than a second) will be able to be activated from the second lap of each race, when it was previously allowed. only from the third.
The measure is aimed at allowing more overtaking as the cars follow closer together in the early stages of racing and have cooler, less worn tires, allowing drivers to perform more aggressive manoeuvres.
Measures were also announced regarding weekend “sprint” races (disputed on Saturdays, maximum distance 100 kilometers). The first free practice and sprint qualifying have been moved forward one day to Friday, while the sprint race and main race qualifying (contested on Sunday) have been postponed to Saturday respectively.
The use of four power units (engines) was also allowed instead of the previously allowed three, allowing teams to use engines more intensively without fear of penalties.
In 2024, sprint races will be held in Brazil, Austria, Qatar, Miami, China and Austin (USA).
