New autonomous bodies take power in Mozambique today

Sixty-five new mayors and new members of municipal assemblies in Mozambique will take office this Wednesday following the sixth municipal elections on 11 October.

The new bodies will be sworn in by members of the Council of Ministers in accordance with Mozambique’s autonomous electoral laws.

The ruling Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo) party will govern 60 of the 65 municipalities following October elections, which are strongly contested by the opposition, which has not accepted the official results, and civil society.

Since the results were announced by the National Electoral Commission (CNE), the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the largest opposition party, has held more than 50 protest marches, with some episodes culminating in clashes between party supporters and police. some people were arrested and others were injured.

Renamo claims victory in the country’s largest cities, including Maputo, based on a parallel count of initial protocols and notifications, but has only been declared winner in four municipalities, half of what it previously had, while the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) ) is the third parliamentary political force supporting the municipality of Beira.
