Bar workers on CP long-distance trains suspended their strike from this Saturday after union representatives reached an agreement with Newrail for a 10% pay rise.
“The strike was suspended because an agreement was reached on a 10% wage increase,” said Luse Luis Trindade of the leadership of the Union of Hotel, Tourism, Restaurant and Similar Workers of the South.
The strike, which was suspended under the agreement, will begin this Saturday and will last for an indefinite period, with demands for “decent wage increases” being part of a spectrum of demands, along with “pay for more work”, “better work” . working conditions”, “full compliance with the Company Agreement” and “against the closure and restriction of the canteen and bars on trains”.
In a statement announcing the strike, the union said that “despite repeated problems with the provision of cafeterias and bars on long-distance trains, [Intercidades e Alfa Pendular] Years later, CP decided to re-provide this service to individuals through a multi-million pound contract signed in 2023 with Newrail, refusing to internalize the service and integrate workers into its workforce.”
The union structure notes that “in 2024 the contract with Newrail was extended by a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 6 months”, pointing out that in 2023 “amounts allocated to Newrail were intended to pay outstanding wages to 130 employees and normalize canteen operations and bars on trains.”
There is currently an international competition for a concession to operate the service, but this is not “an obstacle to negotiations for higher wages,” Luis Trindade said.
