A worker died buried at the Neves Corvo mine in Castro Verde

The 42-year-old worker died after being buried at the Neves Corvo mine in Castro Verde. The incident was reported on Monday around 2:10 p.m.

Members of the Castro Verde fire brigade and GNR troops were mobilized to the scene, as well as an INEM helicopter stationed in the Algarve.

At 19:30, Lusa was contacted by a source from the Subregional Command for Emergency Situations and Civil Protection of Baixo Alentejo, who reported that “excavation work is progressing well” to reach the area.

The Beja PNP Territorial Command also reported at 7:15 p.m. that the “rescue team” from the mining concession company Somincor, owned by the Lundin Mining Group, was “not yet close to the victim.”

Somincor, the concession company of the Neves Corvo mine, has confirmed the death of a worker buried at the mining complex.

“Somincor regrets to announce the death of an employee of our company as a result of an isolated collapse of the earth while operating equipment at the bottom of the Neves Corvo mine,” the company said in a statement sent to the Lusa Agency.

The concessionaire of the Alentejo mining complex, owned by the Swedish-Canadian group Lundin Mining, said that “an investigation into the cause of the incident is ongoing” and that the company is “cooperating with the competent authorities.”
