The Association of Guards Professionals (APG/GNR) this Thursday expressed regret that only 6% of National Republican Guard personnel can take leave between July 26 and August 9 due to World Youth Day, which will be attended by the Pope Francis.
The APG statement explained that internal rules stipulate that only 20% of employees can take leave at the same time when a major event occurs, but the need to control initiatives such as the one that will take place in Lisbon from 1 to 6 August requires that only 6% of the armed GNR forces could take leave.
As an example, PNG indicates that in a place with 20 military personnel, “only one can be on vacation.”
For APG, this attitude shows “deep disrespect for professionals who, having returned to the past, remain in the hands of an institution that does not recognize their right to dispose of their personal and family lives.”
“Holidays are a right, and dates in no sector can be solely at the discretion of the employer. This justifies the commitment of almost all employees throughout the country,” emphasizes APG.
The PSP also instructed the police that the holidays would be suspended from July 24 to August 7 due to World Youth Day.
World Youth Day, considered the biggest event of the Catholic Church, will take place this year in Lisbon from 1 to 6 August, with an expected attendance of around 1.5 million and will rely on the presence of Pope Francis, who will also travel to Fatima.
