The President of the Board of Directors of the World Vaccine Alliance, José Manuel Durao Barroso, presented this Saturday in Addis Ababa a project to reduce inequalities in access to vaccines in Africa.
In an interview with Lusa, Durao Barroso, the former Prime Minister of Portugal and former President of the European Commission, stressed that the Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunization (GAVI, its acronym in English) aims to raise up to one billion dollars. (927 million euros) for this project, which is based on the development of immunization production capacity in Africa.
“How this happened during the pandemic [de covid-19]Africa is in a somewhat unfair position as it produces about 0.1% of vaccines despite being home to about 20% of the world’s population. Here in Africa, this has been very much felt as an issue of injustice, and we believe it is important to help Africa gain its own production capacity,” he stressed.
