The captain of the port of Funchal has extended the warning for bad weather and strong winds on the coast of Madeira, issued on Saturday, until 6am on Monday.
The situation is based on forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) regarding the general weather situation (wind and sea) on the waterfront.
Maritime authorities note that the wind is from the northeast, “fresh to very fresh, sometimes strong until midday.”
Waves will reach four meters on the northern coast and about 2.5 meters on the southern coast.
When faced with this situation, he advises extreme caution “both when preparing to go to sea and when at sea or in coastal areas.”
Maritime authorities are urging increased mooring and close supervision of moored and anchored vessels, stress that travel near the sea or in areas exposed to rough seas should be avoided, and discourage recreational fishing.
