A spokesman for the platform that brings together the PSP unions and the GNR associations said on Tuesday that the spontaneous concentration near the Capitol in Lisbon does not call into question the legitimacy of the protests and praised the behavior of the police.
“This reflects some irregularities from a legal point of view. However, the police knew how to behave with greater elegance and respect, without resorting to any coercion, and this deserves to be emphasized,” said Bruno Pereira, speaking to Lusa . agency.
On Monday, after a meeting in Lisbon’s Praça do Comércio square of about 3,000 PSP and GNR members, many went to the Capitol cinema, where the election debate between PS and PSD leaders was taking place, in a spontaneous march that was not authorized.
Dismissing that the protests, which have been going on for weeks, are beyond the platform’s control, the spokesman acknowledged that “it’s not exactly easy to deal with such a huge amount of discontent” and that the trip to the Capitol theater was a sign of that. .
“What happened next (the concentration on Praça do Comércio) was purely spontaneous and shows that the police are very unhappy, alarmed and want to be heard in a more audible way, symbolically, in the place where the debate between the leaders was taking place. PS and PSD,” he emphasized.
Bruno Pereira said the march went smoothly and praised the “calm, elevated and democratic” behavior of the police.
“I don’t see how this would tarnish the legitimacy of the protest, but it shows the mood of the police these days,” he added.
Asked whether the fight would continue, less than a month before legislative elections, Bruno Pereira admitted that “it will probably slow down” to “give space for debate and political struggle.”
Until now, he adds, the goal has been to influence and stimulate debate.
“We already know that the one who will have to resolve this issue will be one of the leaders who will form the new government. Both have already suggested that they will give top priority to resolving this issue. We respect the times of democracy. , on the constitution of the new government, until they can renew their oaths as promised,” he concluded.
Following the protest, the PSP National Directorate confirmed to Lusa that it would inform the Public Ministry about the march and police concentration near the Capitol since the protest was not authorized.
Members of the PSP and GNR have been protesting for over a month now, demanding an allowance identical to that given to the judicial police.
