Mexican writer Fernanda Melchor won the 25th Casino da Póvoa Literary Prize for her book “Temporada de Furacões”, published by Elsinore, announced this Wednesday at the Correntes d’Escritas festival.
The jury included Ana Gabriela Macedo, Carlos Vaz Marques, Isabel Lucas, Isabel Pires de Lima and José Mario Silva.
“The novel illuminates the darkest side of human nature in a society dominated by extreme violence and infighting between drug cartels. Through exuberant writing marked by colloquial speech, the writer embodies a polyphonic narrative that enhances the existence of characters who remain free on their own. periphery of the periphery. All this leads the reader to an experience of vertigo, free from any moralistic temptation,” the jury wrote.
The prize, currently worth €25,000, will be presented on Saturday along with other awards at the event.
Published in Portugal in January 2023 and translated by Cristina Rodrigues and Arthur Guerra, the book received numerous awards, including the PEN Club for its English translation, and was shortlisted for the International Booker in 2020.
