Gaza ceasefire veto angers Security Council

It was a bucket of cold water. For the third time, the United States vetoed a draft resolution in the UN Security Council demanding an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The Algerian proposal received 13 votes in favor, one abstention (from the UK) and a US vote against.

US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield justified the veto by saying that negotiations were ongoing between the US, Egypt, Israel and Qatar to this end and to ensure the release of the hostages. “This resolution will have a negative impact on these negotiations. It would be irresponsible,” he assured.

A completely different position is taken by China, which at the end of the meeting thus expressed the general opinion of the other members of the Security Council: “With its veto, the United States has made the situation in the Gaza Strip even more dangerous. The parties involved, including China, expressed their strong disappointment and dissatisfaction.”

The US says it has a ceasefire proposal ready but will only move forward “as soon as possible”.
