The ship was attacked by missiles in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Yemen, causing a fire on board, the UK Navy’s Maritime Commercial Operations Office (UKMTO) said on Thursday.
“The ship was attacked by two missiles, causing a fire on board,” the UKMTO said in a statement, adding that “coalition forces responded” to the attack.
Ships transiting this strategic shipping route have been advised to “caution” and the British agency has also asked to “report any suspicious activity” in the region.
In the note, the British specified that the “incident” occurred “70 nautical miles southeast of Aden.”
The Houthi rebels, who have carried out dozens of attacks on ships in the Red Sea as well as Israel since November, have not yet commented on the new attack.
UKMTO’s statement came as US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced it had carried out four “self-defense strikes” and destroyed seven anti-ship missiles, among other military materials, in Houthi-controlled areas, all of which were prepared for launch. “towards the Red Sea.”
The Israeli army reported that Israel’s air defense system shot down a missile this Thursday near its border over the Red Sea, and sirens were activated in the tourist city of Eilat.
The Iranian-backed Houthis have condemned several US and British attacks on their positions in recent days and said they will not be deterred from continuing attacks on Israeli or Israeli-linked ships over the war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
