“The name is forever linked to our football. Rest in peace, Artur Jorge,” said an FPF post on the social network X, accompanied by a photograph of the coach as coach of Portugal, a position he held twice.
In a statement, the LPFP said it “deeply regrets the death of Arthur Jorge, a former Portugal international who was known as a player and coach for FC Porto, FC Benfica and FC Académica.”
“To the bereaved family and to all fans in general, the Portuguese League expresses its deepest condolences,” the statement said.
Head coach between 1981 and 2016, Artur Jorge led Porto to Europe’s biggest club title for the first time, managing the Dragons from 1984/85 to 1986/87 and then from 1988/89 to 1990/91. and also won three domestic titles, a Portuguese Cup and three Super Cups.
Arthur Jorge first took charge of the national team between 1990 and 1991, while also being coach of Porto, and returned to manage Equipa das Quinas between 1996 and 1997.
The former coach also coached Benfica, Academica and Belenenses, clubs for which he distinguished himself as a player between 1965 and 1978, winning 16 caps for Portugal, and worked in 10 foreign countries, with a focus on France , where he trained Matra. and Paris Saint-Germain, as well as for the teams of Switzerland and Cameroon.
