The Granada-Valencia and Levante-Andorra games of the Spanish I and II football leagues, scheduled for Saturday, respectively, were postponed to this Friday as a sign of mourning for the victims of the fire that occurred in Valencia.
LaLiga accepted requests from Valencia and Levante after the aftermath of a fire that destroyed two buildings in Valencia on Thursday and left at least four people dead, 13 injured and more than a dozen missing.
Valencia, eighth in La Liga with 36 points, thanked Granada (19th, with 14) for their willingness to reschedule the match and announced they would contact fans who had already purchased tickets for the game.
Levante, 10th in Spain’s second league with 39 points, took a moment to thank Andorra (21st with 25) for its willingness to postpone Saturday’s match in mourning for the Valencia tragedy.
Judging by footage broadcast on television, the recently built (between 2008 and 2010) 138-apartment tower burned down, both the façade and the interior, leaving virtually only the “skeleton” of the building.
Eyewitnesses at the scene noted that the fire started on the fourth floor during strong winds in Valencia and spread to the entire building in less than half an hour, apparently through the facade, from which metal plates jumped out, revealing flammable material.
