Algarve stops rising water prices

The price of water in the Algarve will no longer rise in March as expected. The measure was suspended by the Intermunicipal Community of the Algarve (Amal) after several opposition mayors announced their intention not to increase tariffs.

António Pina, president of Amal and mayor of Ollhaña (PS), complained in an interview with Expresso about what he sees as “interference through politics in achieving the regional goal of saving water.” He cites Miguel Pinto Luz, head of the AD list in the Algarve, who criticized the measure the day after it was announced.

Despite the slowdown, the commitment of all Algarve municipalities remains to reduce water consumption by 15% this year compared to the same period in 2023. If this does not happen, Aguas do Algarve will reduce the same percentage in its water supply.

Sixteen mayors of the region will meet on March 8 to decide whether any joint alternative measures should be taken.

Given the drought situation in the Algarve, the government admits it has worsened measures already in place after reassessing the situation in June.
