Conservative movements oppose ‘gender doctrine’ in public schools

Several conservative civic movements are marching in five cities across the country this Saturday against what they call the “gender doctrine” and self-determination of gender identity laws in schools.

The protest is scheduled to start at 15:00 this Saturday at the Plaza de la República in Braga, the Plaza de la República in Viana do Castelo, Santa Catarina Street in Porto, Eduardo VII Park in Lisbon and next to the Faro Judicial Court.

The initiative comes from the Wake Up! For our children”, with the support of other conservative movements and against “gender ideology”, such as Associação Família Conservadora, Associação 21/26 or Associação Círculo Parental.

In a statement, one of the organizers criticizes the decree establishing the measures that schools must take to ensure the right to self-determination of gender identity and the protection of students’ sexual characteristics, adopted late last year and vetoed by the President of the Republic.

The text, approved in December by the Assembly of the Republic, stipulated that schools must define “channels of communication and detection” by identifying the person or persons responsible for the situation “in relation to which the situation of children and young people with a gender identity or expression does not correspond to gender assigned at birth.”
