The navy coordinates a relief operation and prevents a major environmental disaster off the Alentejo coast.

From 8:30 pm Friday until 4 am this Saturday, the Navy coordinated an operation that averted a major environmental disaster by rescuing a ship carrying 13,000 tons of fertilizer and more than 200 tons of fuel and oil, 22 kilometers to the southwest. Cape Espichel.

The bulk carrier MBC Daisy asked for help after a failure in its propulsion system.

“It drifted approximately 24 kilometers and was unable to successfully perform an emergency anchoring, leaving approximately 85 meters from its mooring line,” the Navy statement said.

This action was undertaken by the NRP Viana do Castelo through the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Lisboa) and in collaboration with the National Maritime Administration.

“In very difficult sea conditions, the ship was rescued by the tug Castelo de São Jorge, which left Sines at 2 am and began towing at 4 am, when the ship was already in a danger zone about 3 kilometers from Praia da Sancha,” – they add.
