Two churches in the municipality of Agueda in the Aveiro district were robbed on the night between Friday and Saturday. The situation is “already under investigation” and is causing “some social anxiety in the area,” multiple sources told Lusa.
The robberies took place in the church of the parish of Ois da Ribeira and in Paradel, in the parish of Espinhel, as described by the parish priest Júlio Granja in a Facebook post.
Speaking to Lusa, a GNR source from Águeda confirmed the developments and said a meeting was planned for Monday to “deepen the investigation.”
“We were at the scene on the night between Friday and Saturday and we are now going to deepen the investigation, including a meeting with the president of the parish council of Travasso, because these incidents, as well as other incidents that may not have been reported, give rise to some kind of social anxiety,” a GNR source from Águeda told Lusa.
He said the meeting will be aimed at “profiling possible suspects and listing possible other robberies in the area that have not been reported.”
The value of the stolen material and the damage caused to churches is being established.
Parish priest Julio Grangia, contacted by Lusa, reported damage to the main doors, locks and the inside of the sacristies.
“They took a little, a few old coins, but left the losses. The biggest problem is that this is repeating itself, as the gentlemen from the People’s Republic told me when they were here. This naturally worries me,” said Julio Grangia.
In a post on social media, the parish priest said that the doors of the Ois da Ribeira church were broken into and all the boxes were overturned.
“According to GNR, it was a night of multiple robberies. Thieves broke through the doors. External and internal doors leading to the sacristy. Inside the sacristy, all the drawers were overturned, and the thieves took with them several empty coins. wallets, as well as another with a small number of coins, many of which are out of circulation (…). They left more than what was stolen,” the parish priest wrote.
Regarding the attack on the Paradella church, the parish priest said that the door to the storage room of the Brotherhood of St. Peter was forced open and “everything they found” was ransacked.
