Vitor Murta will step down as president of the Boavista SAD, the director announced this Monday, moments after the “checkered” fans protested against the defeat of Sporting Braga (0-4) in the 23rd round of the I Football League season.
“I have already informed the majority shareholder and will now inform the President of the SAD General Council that I am ceasing my duties on the board of directors. From now on, I will only be part of the management, despite the fact that the majority shareholder has invited me to serve another term,” he said in the press center of the Bessa stadium in Porto.
Successor to historic former president Joao Loureiro in leadership of the club, a position to which he was first elected in December 2018 and reappointed four years later, Vitor Murta succeeded Alvaro Braga Junior at the helm of Boavista SAD in 2020.
“I have already stated that I will not carry out another mandate, especially because the focus must be on the players. I understand that at the moment I am a destabilizing factor in the sense that people spend more time addressing me in less explicit terms. better than supporting the team,” he emphasized, while the “chess players” remain in 12th position in the championship with 24 points, which is six above the direct relegation places.
Vitor Murta took over a few months before Spanish-Luxembourg investor Gerard Lopez took over a majority stake in Boavista SAD, a decision that was unanimously approved by club members at the General Assembly held in Besse.
“I had to make this decision in the game with Gil Vicente. [derrota por 1-0, em 30 de dezembro, para a 15.ª ronda da I Liga]. I did not do this, especially since I believed that now was not the time, and that poor treatment in one’s own home was unacceptable. Therefore, I will only take current management actions and will not make any decisions that are important to the goals of the club. The process of registering Boavista for the next season will begin soon, but I will no longer be in charge of this work. I wish good luck to whoever succeeds me because I want success in Boavista,” he stressed.
Vitor Murta will still be considering his future leadership of the club, whose next election is due at the end of the calendar year, with the Panthers always pursuing the main goal of remaining in the top flight for the duration of their mandate.
“About 15 days ago we paid Boavista’s debt of 1.5 million euros (ME) to our former coach Jaime Pacheco and other players from 20 years ago. This administration and this management have been paying off debts for 20 years and, like this one, have already paid off dozens of debts. I have carried out several registrations for Boavista in the Club League, which were not easy, but in which we were always successful. We remained in the I League, I believe that this will happen at the end of this season. 101% in our players,” he said.
Assuring that the salaries of the first-team players had been settled “a long time ago,” in a season marked by several delays, Vitor Murta promised to pay the workers’ salaries for January before leaving the SAD “with a clear conscience.”
