Portugal today unveils Michelin-starred restaurants at national gala

This Tuesday evening, Portugal will find out which restaurants are rated by the Iberian Michelin Guide at a gala taking place in the Algarve, the first exclusively national event that the organization says will be “an annual event not to be missed.”

The Algarve Congress Palace in Albufeira will be the stage for the Portuguese presentation ceremony of the 2024 Michelin Guide, which will bring together about 500 guests and will receive support of about 400 thousand euros from Turismo de Portugal.

“This will undoubtedly be the most important evening of Portuguese gastronomy and will become an annual event not to be missed. This is a party especially for the chefs of this country,” a source from an Iberian guide based in Madrid told Lusa. .

Since the early 2010s, Michelin Spain and Portugal have held annual galas to announce award-winning restaurants, always taking place in Spanish cities, with the exception of one organized in 2018 in Lisbon.

Tuesday’s gala will be the first gala dedicated exclusively to Portugal, a decision justified by the rapid development of the national gastronomy and the international publication’s intention to “put Portugal on the culinary map of the world.” The Spanish part of the guide was announced in Barcelona in November.

There are currently 31 Michelin-starred restaurants in Portugal (“excellent food, worth a stop”), but are expected to lose one award following the closure of Eneko Lisboa at the end of the year, as well as seven with two. stars (“excellent cuisine, worth a detour”).

Since the introduction of a guide to the Iberian region in 1910, Portugal has never received the maximum rating (three stars, “unique cuisine worth the trip”).

All the chefs from Portugal’s Michelin-starred restaurants were invited, as well as a “small group” of Spaniards, including Quique Dacosta (Denia) and Sergio and Javier Torres (Cocina Hermanos Torres, Barcelona), both with three stars. .

The ceremony will be hosted by Portuguese presenter and actress Catarina Furtado, and the dinner will be prepared by seven chefs from the region: Dieter Coscina and João Oliveira as coordinators, as well as Hans Neuner, José Lopes, Liborio Buonocore, Louis Anjos and Luis. Brito.

In the 2023 edition, Portugal received five new stars: Encanto (José Aviles and Joao Diogo), Kabuki Lisbon (Paulo Alves), Kanazawa (Paulo Morais) – in Lisbon, Euskalduna Studio (Vasco Coelho Santos) and Le Monument (Julien Monbabout). ), both in Porto.

It also received a new green star, which highlights the sustainable gastronomy awarded to Mesa de Lemos (Pass de Silgueiros, one Michelin star) led by Diogo Rocha, who joins the already awarded Il Galo d’Oro (Funchal, two Michelin stars). and Esporão (Reguengos de Monsaraz, one star).

In addition to the stars, Portugal has 37 restaurants with a Bib Gourmand rating (good quality/price food, around 45 euros) and 90 recommended in the guidebook.

Created in the early 20th century to assist travelers on their journeys, the Michelin Guide is today considered a global guide to restaurant qualifications.

In awarding a star to a restaurant, inspectors, working anonymously, look for quality of food, skill in preparation and textures, balance and harmony of flavours, cuisine’s personality and regularity.
