San Francisco Xavier Hospital officials on Tuesday expressed their solidarity with Avelina Ferreira’s family and were “totally available” and interested in collaborating with various organizations investigating the case.
Avelina Ferreira’s body was found Monday in the woods behind Sao Jose College in Lisbon after the woman disappeared last December after being admitted to the emergency department of San Francisco Xavier Hospital.
This Tuesday, in a statement, the board of directors of the Western Lisbon Local Health Office (ULSLO) expresses its condolences to the family and friends of Avelina Ferreira “for the tragic outcome” and reports that it has already done so directly to the family. when readiness for psychological support was expressed.
“The confirmation of death is also a source of sadness and horror for this institution and its professionals, so we now express our solidarity,” the statement said.
ULSLO recalls that after the disappearance, “many medical personnel from the facility joined and actively participated in the search for the user near San Francisco Xavier Hospital.”
In a statement, ULSLO said it will continue to closely monitor the case and its developments.
Avelina Ferreira, 73, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, disappeared on December 12 last year after she entered the hospital’s emergency department alone because her husband was not allowed to accompany her. The husband waited outside the emergency room for seven hours until he discovered that Avelina had disappeared without anyone noticing.
The family accused the hospital of not allowing her husband to accompany Avelina Ferreira to the emergency department, who was forced to wait in the waiting room, and launched a petition in January asking for mechanisms to be put in place to prevent people with dementia from going missing.
ULSLO comprises three hospitals: San Francisco Xavier Hospital, Egas Moniz Hospital and Santa Cruz Hospital.
