A warning for strong winds along the waterfront issued by Funchal’s harbor captain earlier in the week has been extended until 06:00 Saturday, regional maritime authorities said on Friday.
This situation is based on forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere.
As such, regional maritime authorities are extending the coastal wind warning for the sixth day in a row.
In the information, the captain notes that winds will be from the northeast “very fresh to strong, decreasing to fresh to very fresh from midday before becoming moderate to fresh towards the end of the period,” with visibility being “good.” , sometimes moderate” and waves up to 3.5 meters on the northern coast and 1.5 meters on the southern coast.
The captain reinforces his advice to “the entire maritime community and the general public to exercise caution both when preparing to go to sea and when at sea or in coastal areas.”
Regional authorities recommend increasing mooring and monitoring of moored and anchored vessels, avoiding walking near the sea or in areas exposed to rough seas, and not engaging in recreational fishing, especially near rocks and areas of rocks often exposed to breaking waves.
