The Council of Justice denied Benfica a repeat of the Futsal League Cup final

The Council of Justice (CJ) of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) this Friday rejected Benfica’s protest against the Futsal League Cup final against Sporting due to the appearance of Tynan on the field.

The final of the competition, played on 21 January and won 4-2 by Sporting, earned a “deep protest over the refereeing” of the game from Benfica, who the next day regretted “consecutive decisions that undermined the truth of sport.” , caused damage to Benfica and created a very serious precedent for national futsal.”

Benfica protested the match played in Povoa de Varzim and the FPF referee dismissed the complaint on the grounds of factual errors in the arbitration proceedings.

“The refereeing team of the protested game did not make any refereeing error related to the validity of the protested game, so we can only consider the Protestant club’s claim to be unfounded,” CJ summarizes, which is contrary to the aspirations of the Protestant club. is embodied.”

Benfica justified the protest, especially as Sporting’s two-goal striker Tynan “came off the bench to break up a dangerous Benfica attack with less than a minute and a half left in the match, with the result 3-2.”

The Brazil and Kazakhstan international, who was man of the match, was given a yellow card when, in the Eagles’ understanding, “the rules are clear and imply, at a minimum, his expulsion.”

With regard to these facts, the FPF Court understands that the decision of the arbitral panel consisting of Ruben Santos (AF Porto) and Cristiano Santos (AF Porto) considers it to be “a decision on a question of fact, the knowledge of which is prohibited to the Court, in the current protest procedure, since it is not subject to appeal.”

According to futsal laws, referees must “warn a player if he has entered the field without his permission”, punishing the invading team with a penalty kick, direct if he interferes and indirect if he does not interfere.

This was Sporting’s fifth Futsal League Cup, defeating Benfica 4–2 in the final of the 2023/24 season to become the sole record holder for most titles in the competition, breaking a tie with Benfica who were the holders and have four titles . scepters.

Leonin were already leading 3-1 at half-time after goals from Tynan in the first and 19th minutes, Sokolov in the eighth minute and Cishkala scoring in the 18th minute for Benfica.

The Reds did cut the lead to 3-2 in the second half with an own goal from Joao Matos in the 34th minute, with Sporting getting the verdict in the dying moments in the 40th minute through Tomas Paso.
