The Portuguese Red Cross (CVP) recorded a 73% increase in requests for support for families in vulnerable situations in 2023, the agency said, which will launch a solidarity campaign in major commercial areas.
According to CVP, more than 50,000 vulnerable families are supported through social assistance programs that help pay for house rent and other basic expenses such as water, electricity, doctor visits or buying food and essentials.
The CVP statement also said that the “Cartão Dá CVP” program – a card with a balance equivalent to the value of regular grocery baskets and which can be used for purchases in Continente stores – recorded a 59% increase in the number of people. receive support, three quarters of whom are women, with more than half aged between 30 and 50 years.
In 2023, 8,314 new people took advantage of this support, resulting in the issuance of 1,132 new cards, of which about 35% are single-parent families, 34% are couples with children and 44% of beneficiaries are unemployed.
In the direction of monitoring homeless people, provided for in 10 local structures of the KVP, compared to 2022, an increase of 80% was noted.
In 2023, CVP has “strengthened its capacity to provide response activities such as intake, distribution of food and hygiene products to street teams, and assistance in identifying life-changing projects affecting the lives of 1,986 people, 69% of whom are men,” the organization assures.
The assistance provided also includes assistance to victims of domestic violence and their children, elderly people and day centers, as well as homes, home support centers and kindergartens.
To strengthen its support to the public, the Red Cross will launch a solidarity campaign in 340 major supermarkets across the country this weekend.
“Next weekend, 9 and 10 March, CVP volunteers will be present in several stores of El Corte Inglès, E Leclerc, Lidl, Pingo Doce and Sonae (Continente, Continente Modelo and Continente Bom Dia) to promote the collection of food and hygiene products.” . , adds the institution.
With this campaign, the 159-delegation CVP intends to “strengthen its response capacity and further expand its activities.”
According to the CVP, new solidarity campaigns of the same nature are planned for the third and fourth quarters of 2024.
