South Africa continues construction of a wall on the border with Mozambique

The government of the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal is building the first five kilometers of a concrete wall along the border with Mozambique to stop stolen cars and smuggling of goods.

According to the South African press, this is a project launched in 2020 by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Roads and Transport and the National Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DWPI), but which was suspended the following year due to difficulties with funding and with the contractor .

At a meeting held on March 6, authorities involved in the project updated progress, announcing that construction of a more than five-kilometer wall at Umkhanyakuda, near Mozambique’s southern border, was already underway. A total of eight kilometers are planned in the first phase, which covers the Tembe Elephant Park.
