This Sunday, Angola’s Foreign Minister advocated for greater attention to the needs of young people in the context of human capital development, citing access to education and employment among the main challenges.
Tete Antonio spoke this Sunday in Luanda at the opening of the Council of Ministers of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which will last until Monday, in his capacity as acting president of that body.
In his opening speech, the head of Angolan diplomacy, quoted in a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX), noted that it is impossible to talk about human capital and industrialization in the region without paying attention to the needs of youth.
“Our region is blessed with a large youth population, with recent estimates indicating that 75 per cent of the total population of SADC are young people under the age of 35,” he stressed.
Young people face numerous challenges, including limited access to education, skills development, employment opportunities and resources, the foreign affairs chief said.
The council is composed of ministers from the 16 SADC member countries and meets twice a year, namely in March and August.
This session of the SADC Council of Ministers is held under the theme “Human and Financial Capital: Key Factors for Sustainable Industrialization in the SADC Region”, recognizing the need to develop, mobilize and utilize human and financial capital to advance the industrialization agenda. The Council will also approve the SADC secretariat’s annual institutional plan and budget for the 2024/25 financial year.
