Italian coach Roberto D’Aversa was sacked by Lecce this Monday after an incident on Sunday during an Italian Football League game in which he allegedly head-butted a Verona player.
The situation occurred after the final whistle, when the coach entered the field and, as can be seen in the footage, headbutted Verona striker Thomas Henry while he was arguing with Lecce defender Marin Pongracic.
“Following the events at the end of the Lecce-Verona match, Lecce announces that it has relieved coach Roberto D’Aversa of his duties. We thank the coach and his technical team for the work they have done,” the club said today.
In the released images, D’Aversa approaches the players, ducks his head and appears to headbutt Thomas Henry, who immediately falls to the ground, although the coach claims he did not do so.
Following an incident in Verona’s 1-0 win over Lecce, referee Daniele Chiffi sent off the coach as well as the striker.
In Serie A, Lecce are in 15th place, just one point above the relegation line, while Verona are in 13th place, but also two points above the danger zone.
