This Wednesday, the European Commission opened an infringement procedure and gave Portugal two months to correct shortcomings in the transposition of European Union (EU) rules regarding seasonal workers.
By sending the notification letter, the Community Manager requires Portugal to correctly transfer and apply certain obligations in accordance with Directive 2014/36/EU concerning seasonal workers.
The European law under consideration aims to guarantee transparent rules for the employment of seasonal workers from third countries with guarantees of adequate working and living conditions, equal rights and protection against exploitation.
The Commission’s statement emphasizes that full compliance with the directive is an important condition for reducing illegal immigration.
In addition to Portugal, Spain, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Finland and Sweden also received notification letters.
If no satisfactory responses are received within two months, the European Commission will move to the second stage of the infringement procedure.
