The number of measles cases in Portugal has risen to 16, according to a report published this Wednesday by the Directorate General of Health (DGS), which also lists four cases under investigation.
As for the data published on Friday, two more cases of measles were reported in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley regions.
Second epidemiological bulletin “Epidemic activity of measles in Portugal in 2024” has 16 cases from January 1 to March 10, 2024, out of 106 reported suspected cases, four of which are under investigation.
Most of them were reported in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, where nine cases were confirmed, as well as six in the north and one in the autonomous region of Madeira.
Four cases required hospitalization; no deaths were recorded.
The first confirmed case was a 20-month-old child who did not live in Portugal and was not vaccinated.
The DGS warns of the importance of measles vaccination in line with the National Vaccination Programme, which recommends two doses for children and adults born after 1970.
