PSD president defends balanced negotiations between teachers and government

PSD President Luis Montenegro finds it difficult to restore the entire career of teachers due to financial implications, but advocates a balanced solution to negotiations between teachers and the government.

In an interview with the Eco newspaper, Luis Montenegro says that when it comes to teachers, it’s the “elephant in the room,” defending teacher assessments but not supporting quotas.

“I wanted to recover as long as possible, within the framework of a balanced criterion of public administration and, of course, also financial consequences. There is an elephant in the room, let’s not ignore that. We all know that full recovery [da carreira] of more than 100,000 people is of very great financial importance, he argues.

In an interview, the PSD president defends teacher and student evaluation.

“I support both student assessment and teacher assessment. I consider it a huge mistake to stop assessing, let’s say, mandatory, students at the end of the training cycles and move to benchmark tests. Demand and, therefore, as well as quality,” he pointed out.

Regarding the assessment of teachers, Luis Montenegro clarifies that a solution can only be reached through a negotiation process between the government and teachers.

“There is a problem with a career, there is a problem with the attractiveness of a teaching career. There are, of course, others, such as excessive bureaucracy, the authority of the teacher. exercise of the profession with family life. And, in fact, teachers, like many civil servants, were deprived of normal career advancement due to various ups and downs over the years,” he stressed.

In the understanding of the leader of the SDP, a formula must be found that is fair both for teachers and for other sectors of government.

In an interview, the SDP leader insists that he does not support the introduction of quotas, believing that they may “not take into account the criteria for professional promotion, which, nevertheless, are very good.”

“I have doubts… it’s not because of the length of service. Evaluation, when conducted by quota, may not take into account professional career development criteria, which are still very good. If we have a quota, we close. that they can only progress up to a certain number,” he said.

According to the PSD leader, progress should take into account evaluation, which should be hierarchical and then should be a model.

Luis Montenegro adds that it is available in “a process of negotiation so that language can be found that (…) is fair, where merit is rewarded, where those who work harder and perform better get bigger pay raises.”

“But that doesn’t mean the rest are standing still,” he said.

In an interview, Luis Montenegro said that he agrees with the need to have a distribution model for teachers, which creates a huge injustice.

“When teachers demand a fairer placement process, much more can be done than has been done,” he said.
