A Bangladeshi court today asked the local government for a list of migrant workers who died building stadiums and other facilities during preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which was held in Qatar.
The order comes after lawyer Masood Reza Sobhan filed a complaint in December that more than 450 Bangladeshi workers had been killed and dozens injured while building stadiums and hotels in Qatar.
“The workers were treated inhumanly. Sometimes they were forced to work for 14 hours at a temperature of 52 degrees, but Qatari laws did not allow him to protest, ”the lawyer told the EFE news agency when filing a complaint.
Massoud Reza Sobhan wants the government of Qatar and FIFA, whom he called “allies in crime”, to pay compensation to the families of the dead and injured workers.
The Qatari authorities were accused of violating the rights of migrant workers during the construction of infrastructure for the World Cup, which was held from November 20 to December 18 last year.
Although Qatari authorities deny it, several organizations point to thousands of deaths in the country between 2010 and 2019 in connection with work related to the World Cup.
