The guard who was attacked by an inmate in a Coimbra prison on Monday has already been released from hospital, a source at the National Union of Prison Guards (SNCGP) told Lusa on Tuesday.
According to the same source, tests carried out at the hospital showed that the guard did not suffer serious head injuries after being punched twice in the face.
The Directorate General of Reintegration and Prison Services (DGRSP) confirmed the incident on Monday evening, saying it happened “around 3:20 pm” and “unexpectedly.”
The guard received “first aid from prison medical staff” and then went “to an NHS hospital”, he added.
The DGRSP also said that the prisoner had been placed in segregation while “he undergoes a competent disciplinary process” and that the facts would be “referred to the prosecutor’s office for appropriate criminal and judicial measures.”
According to an SNCGP source, the prisoner has already been described as violent.
Another prison source told Lusa that the attacker was 35 years old and was serving a sentence for, among other things, offenses of bodily harm and domestic violence.
The prisoner in question had already been transferred to Monsanto’s maximum security prison once after also attacking prison guards.
The same source noted that the inmate was involved in “an altercation with another inmate” on Monday morning.
