Football coach Abel Ferreira said on Tuesday he is unlikely to leave Brazil’s Palmeiras in the next two years, saying he is where he wants to be at the club where he won titles.
“The club I’m in is a club that values me, that recognizes me, where you feel like you’re part of the process. […] I’m happy where I am, I’m where I want to be, my family is with me and, fortunately, I’ve reached a point in my life where I can choose where I want to be, and I’m unlikely to go anywhere in the next two years,” admitted Abel Ferreira.
The Portuguese coach, who has been coaching the Brazilians Palmeiras since 2020, has won the last two editions of the Brazilian tournament (2022 and 2023) and two Libertadores Cups (2020 and 2021), as well as the South American Super Cup (2022) and the Copa del Rey. Brazil (2020), the Brazilian Super Cup (2023) and two São Paulo championships (2022 and 2023).
“It was in Brazil that a top club gave me the opportunity to reach my full potential, because only with good players and a structure that competes for the championship can you reach your full potential. Abel Ferreira spoke to reporters on the sidelines of the National Association of Football Coaches Forum (ANTF), where he took part in a discussion with Pedro Caixinha, Ruy Vitoria and Joel Rocha on the topic “Modeling training according to the competitive context.”
“Football is very dynamic. “Going to a new club, with the wrong people, at the wrong time is not always a good thing and one of the secrets of a coach is to make the right decisions about where you want to be and when you want to leave,” he revealed.
This is because “not going and not accepting anything” does not allow us to do the work steadily, with the head, torso and limbs, as Abel Ferreira wishes, and that is why he becomes the project coach.
“Project coaches are coaches who spend more time in clubs, because there are other things besides just titles, which are also necessary, but also participation in the structure, in development, in the organization, which is what I do, and this also gives I had a lot of fun,” he concluded.
The ANTF concludes today in Viseu, the 2024 European City of Sports, with 1,200 football and futsal coaches taking part and “the most active ever,” President José Pereira told Lusa.
