Former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales will return to the country on April 6 and will be at the disposal of the justice system, which on Wednesday announced it would arrest him upon his return to Spain on corruption charges.
According to the EFE news agency, the defense of the former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) explained to the judge presiding over the case that Rubiales has a return ticket from the Dominican Republic scheduled for April 6 and should arrive in Madrid at 11:25 am.
Rubiales’ lawyer says she does not know whether the arrest of the former RFEF president was ordered, as EFE reported on Wednesday, but says: “We want to make it clear that Mr. Rubiales is available before justice provides all clarifications on regarding the ongoing investigation.”
On Wednesday, news agency EFE reported that Luis Rubiales would be detained upon his return to Spain following searches over alleged contract irregularities in a corruption investigation.
The operation was launched by the Central Operations Unit (CO) of the Civil Guard and is the result of an investigation into alleged criminal activities related to corporate corruption, maladministration and money laundering.
The trial concerns alleged irregularities in contracts signed by the RFEF since 2018, a period during which the organization was chaired by Luis Rubiales and which included the hosting of the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.
Searches took place at the RFEF headquarters in Madrid and at the home of Luis Rubiales in Granada, among other places, and at least four arrests were made.
Rubiales led the RFEF from 2018 to 2023, and he resigned after Spain player Jenny Hermoso filed a complaint about a kiss he gave her on the lips to celebrate winning the Women’s World Cup.
