Cape Verde’s hospitality industry will hit record number of guests in 2023

Cape Verde’s hotel establishments have broken a record number of guests in 2023, exceeding one million, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) said on Wednesday.

The year ended with 1,010,739 guests providing 5,150,806 overnight stays, an increase of 20.9% and 26.0% respectively compared to 2022.

The figures also exceed pre-pandemic values: “compared to 2019, the number of guests increased by 23.4%” and the number of overnight stays increased by 0.7%.

In 2023, the UK remained the main country of origin for tourists, “but Romanians stood out for having the longest stay in Cape Verde, staying an average of 6.5 nights.”

Sal Island continues to be the most sought after island, accounting for 57.1% of hotel visits.

Guests stayed an average of five nights at the hotels, with an average bed occupancy rate of 52%.

The hotel business figures are in line with the tourist arrival figures announced by the Minister of Tourism in an interview with Lusa in February, when Carlos Santos announced that Cape Verde had broken a new visitor record with more than 900 thousand tourists. , in 2023.

Forecasts indicate steady growth in tourism in Cape Verde, subject to investment in accommodation and other infrastructure to meet demand.

Internationally, the goal is to “consolidate” European markets, which account for more than 90% of tourists coming to the archipelago, as well as attract visitors from African and American countries such as Brazil and the United States.

Tourism, a sector that accounts for about 25% of Cape Verde’s gross domestic product (GDP), is centered on the islands of Sal and Boavista.
