The principal of the Maurice Ravel high school in Paris, France, has resigned from his position after being the subject of death threats on social media for asking three students not to wear the Islamic hijab at school, in accordance with a French law that prohibits wearing Islamic hijab. religious symbols in public places.
It all happened at the end of February, and the request was not accepted by one of the students, who refused to take off the scarf. A young woman filed a complaint against the teacher, alleging that she was mistreated and received a “severe blow to the arm,” but the complaint was dismissed.
French politicians have already expressed support for the director. Prime Minister and former Education Minister Gabriel Attal received the teacher in his office and announced that the state would “file a complaint for defamation” against a student who unfairly accused the principal of aggression after refusing to remove his veil.
In 2004, the French parliament banned the use of the Islamic headscarf in schools to ensure the neutrality and secularity of government institutions, and last year extended the ban to the abaya, the long robe worn by Muslim women.
However, a 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of making threats against the director and is expected to appear in court in April.
