Voter registration for Mozambique’s general elections has not yet begun in Kisanga district due to insecurity caused by armed groups, the Technical Secretariat for the Administration of Elections (STAE) said this Saturday.
“In Kisanga, voter registration has not yet started because we have not yet been able to deploy teams there,” STAE spokeswoman Regina Matsinhe told public broadcaster Rádio Moçambique.
Matsinghe said Kisanga constituency is the only constituency where voter registration has not yet begun in northern Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province, which has been plagued by terrorist attacks for more than six years.
An STAE spokesman said this Saturday that 32.88% of the approximately 7.7 million voters scheduled for the October 9 general election this year had already been registered in the first 15 days of the operation, which ended today.
Matsinhe said registration of Mozambican citizens living abroad began this Saturday and is expected to reach about two million voters.
Cabo Delgado province has faced an armed insurgency for six years, with the extremist group Islamic State claiming responsibility for some attacks.
After a slight lull in 2023, these attacks have become more frequent in recent weeks, leaving an estimated 100,000 people displaced in February alone and a trail of destruction, death and lost families.
